ABA therapy is an evidence-based best practice treatment that uses many techniques for understanding and changing behaviors. The Eliza Hope Center has therapists that are trained to help children with autism learn new skills as well as avoid negative behaviors.
Positive reinforcement is a large component of ABA therapy. For example, a goal behavior may be getting a child to respond when her name is called. Each time she answers to her name, she is rewarded with something she values (a sticker, a favorite toy, watching a video). This reinforces the good behavior and hopefully over time, she will continue this behavior. By focusing on what comes before and after a specific behavior,
ABA therapy can also be used to help children replace negative behaviors with more positive ones. Depending on a child’s needs, ABA therapy can be an effective way to increase language and communication skills, improve focus, and decrease problem behaviors.
